چکیده

The axion solution to the strong CP problem makes use of a global Peccei–Quinn U(1) symmetry which is susceptible to violations from quantum gravitational effects. We show how discrete gauge symmetries can protect the axion from such violations. PQ symmetry emerges as an approximate global symmetry from discrete gauge symmetries. Simple models based on ZN symmetries with N = 11, 12, etc are presented realizing the DFSZ axion and the KSVZ axion. The discrete gauge anomalies are cancelled by a discrete version of the Green–Schwarz mechanism. In the supersymmetric extension our models provide a natural link between the SUSY breaking scale, the axion scale, and the SUSY–preserving μ term. Axions and the Strong CP Problem in M-theory

We examine the possibility that the strong CP problem is solved by stringtheoretic axions in strong-coupling limit of the E8×E 8 heterotic string theory (M -theory). We first discuss some generic features of gauge kinetic functions in compactified M -theory, and examine in detail the axion potential induced by the explicit breakings other than the QCD anomaly of the non-linear U(1)PQ symmetries...

Three-Form Gauging of axion Symmetries and Gravity

Nonlinearly realized Abelian global symmetries can be reformulated as local shift symmetries gauged by three-form gauge fields. The anomalous symmetries of the Standard Model (such as Peccei-Quinn or B+L) can be dualized to local symmetries gauged by the Chern-Simons three-forms of the Standard Model gauge group. In this description the strong CP problem can be reformulated as the problem of a ...

Global Symmetries in Duals of Supersymmetric SU(N)×SU(M) and Application to Composite Axion

In this paper, we construct a supersymmetric composite axion (c-axion) model based on the gauge group SU(N) × SU(M), which is one possible physical application of the N=1 duality. The dual of SU(M) is interpreted as the color gauge group. We illustrate the existence of c-axion for the case of one dual quark in the dual gauge group SU(M̃ ). 14.80.Mz, 11.30–j, 11.30.Pb Typeset using REVTEX E-mail:...

More About Discrete Gauge Anomalies

I discuss and extend several results concerning the cancellation of discrete gauge anomalies. I show how heavy fermions do not decouple in the presence of discrete gauge anomalies. As a consequence, in general, cancellation of discrete gauge anomalies cannot be described merely in terms of low energy operators involving only the light fermions. I also discuss cancellation of discrete gauge anom...

Gravity and global symmetries.

There exists a widely spread notion that gravitational effects can strongly violate global symmetries. If this is correct, it may lead to many important consequences. We will argue, in particular, that nonperturbative gravitational effects in the axion theory lead to a strong violation of CP invariance unless they are suppressed by an extremely small factor g <∼ 10−82. One could hope that this ...
